The thief cometh not, but for to steal, and to kill, and to destroy” (John 10:10).

“Lily, Lily!” Lola heard her mother’s call, and felt her shaking her awake from her sleep.  “Lily, come.  Come quick!” Omotola called her sleeping child.

“Mama…” Lola stirred from her sleep, and rubbed her eyes.  She couldn’t believe it.  It was really her mother!  She pinched herself, because she believed she must be dreaming.  No, this was real.  “Mommy, is it really you?”

“Sssshhh…  Come my darling.  Come and see.”

Omotola walked out of Lola’s bedroom suite, which was surprisingly wide open.  Lola grabbed her robe and hastened after her mother.   “Where are we going?” she asked.

“Sssshhh…  Follow me.”

Lola followed her mother up the stairway that led to the penthouse suite of the Grand Menage Hotel, Port Harcourt.  The door to the penthouse was also wide open.  Lola entered with her mother.

She could hear the moanings of a woman, and knew that it was the sound of love making.  But who was the woman, and what was she doing in Danny’s suite?  She heard Danny moaning, and she walked in to the sound of his climax.  She was horrified to see that the woman he had just pleased was not her!

“What is this???” she asked in fury.  But Danny could not hear her.  He did not even acknowledge her presence.  “Answer me, Danny!  Who is she?”

Still Danny did not appear to have heard her.  Lola turned to her mother, but she wasn’t there anymore.  She panicked.  What was happening???  “Danny, who is she?  Who is she?”

**********

Lola tossed and turned in her sleep, tears streaming down her cheeks.  She was talking in her sleep, “Who is she?  Who is she?” until she stirred herself awake in her turmoil.  It was just a dream!  But it had felt so real!

Lola looked and saw that her hotel room door was indeed shut.  What had just happened?

Her heart was beating fast as she remembered the very graphic scene she had witnessed in Danny’s suite.  Could it be possible that he had another woman in his bed tonight?  Was it her mind playing tricks on her?  Whatever it was, the pain was real, and Lola felt her heart ache so badly, she sobbed at the thought…at the possibility that it could in fact be true.

Lola couldn’t get back to sleep, as her heart continued to race.  She checked the time, and it was 2am in the morning.  She laid in bed wondering what she should do.  She would have prayed, but she didn’t know what to say to God.  She just laid in bed, the sound of Danny’s climax taunting her.  Please, let it be a dream, please God…she prayed eventually.

At 3am, Lola finally slept off again, and wouldn’t wake until the Sun announced the morning.

**********

Lola woke up at 7am, and immediately remembered her vision in the night.  She still didn’t want to believe that it was true…that it was not her mind playing tricks on her.  But the ache in her heart was real.  She knew that it was not an impossibility, that Danny would have had another woman in his bed last night.  And that knowledge hurt so badly!

She realised that as much as she loved Danny, she didn’t trust him.  She couldn’t put such past him.  Though her husband spent many late nights in his office, because she knew his character, she trusted him, and would hardly believe that he would sleep with another woman.  But Danny, she did not know so well.  And now, her fragile faith in him was being tested by a dream.

How could she determine the truth?  Did she really want to know the truth?  Did it really matter to her that Danny was in bed with another woman last night?  He had not made any promises to her…  They had never slept together…  The status of their relationship was unclear.  Was she his girlfriend now, because they shared a kiss last night?  Was it right for her to feel betrayed when he was at liberty to sleep with whomever he pleased, seeing as they were not in a committed relationship?

Nevertheless, betrayed was what she felt.  Her body, mind and heart were tortured by her vision in the night.  She needed to know the truth about Danny.  She would have to be watchful and attentive to his behaviour this morning…and look for evidence of another woman’s presence in his suite last night.  She felt bad already for snooping on the man she loved, so early in their relationship.  But she had to know the truth.

**********

At breakfast, Danny observed a weirdness about Lola’s composure.  There was something wrong.  Was it the kiss?  Was she feeling bad for cheating on her husband with him?  Had he moved too fast?  What could be bothering her, he wondered.

“Are you okay?” he asked, concerned.

Lola forced a smile.  She hadn’t realised that she was wearing her emotions on her sleeve.  “Yeah, sorry…  Just feeling sad that this is our last breakfast together.”

Danny smiled.  “Awww… It’s not the last…  We’ll be having many more breakfasts together, once I’m back in Lagos.”

“What about…” Lola didn’t want to say the word ‘husband’, “…Bolu?”

“What about him?” Danny asked.

Lola was shocked by his question.  Was there to be no regard for Bolu at all?  “I can’t surely have breakfast with you every morning, while I’m married to him…”

“Exactly.  Are you with him or with me?” Danny asked, as he took a bite of his sausage.

“Well…  I can’t just walk out on him…” Lola said, realizing that she hadn’t given much thought to how she would transition into this new relationship.

“I’m not going to share you with him, Lily.  You have to tell him that it’s over.  You’re with me, now.”

Lola was quiet.  This was really happening.  Was she about to walk out on her husband to be with a man, she hardly knew, who could be sleeping with God knows how many women?  She had thought they would take it slow.  Maybe if she hadn’t had that dream, she would have been more excited about Danny’s proposal…but now, she had to be realistic.

Lola excused herself and went to the bathroom.  She was feeling nauseated.  While there, she noticed the evidence she needed that a woman was in his suite last night.  There were make-up stains in the sink, and some coloured strands of weavon.  Before she could think it through, she exited the bathroom with a strand between her fingers.  “What is this?”

“What?” Danny looked up at Lola.

“This!” she shoved the strand in his face.

“It looks like hair, Lily.”

“I know what it looks like.  But why is it in your sink?  You don’t wear blonde wigs, do you?” Lola tried to contain her anger.

“What are you doing, Lily?  Why are you interrogating me?” Danny asked her.

“I want to know if you slept with another woman last night, Danny.  Tell me the truth.”

“First of all, you have no right to ask me that.  I am a bachelor, and who I sleep with is my business.”  Lola couldn’t believe her ears.  He wasn’t going to deny it?  “And secondly, jealousy really doesn’t look good on you.”

“So, you’re not denying it?” Lola slumped, feeling like someone had just stepped on her heart.  She knew the truth, but she willed him to lie to her, just so she could live in denial a little longer.

“Do you want me to lie to you?” Danny asked Lola, while leaning back on the sofa.

“Oh my God, I think I’m going to be sick!” Lola ran back to the bathroom and threw up.

Danny stood up and met her at the door.  “It didn’t mean anything, Lily.  I was just so horny last night, after our kiss…  I needed a release.”

Lola threw up again.  She was feeling dizzy, so she sat down on the toilet seat, while her head spun.  She couldn’t believe he was already breaking her heart.

“Hey, are you okay?” Danny went to stroke her hair.

“Don’t touch me!” she slapped his hand away.

“Please, don’t make a big deal out of this.  It’s not like I was cheating on you…  You’re the one who is married!”

“Wow!!!” Lola couldn’t believe his nerve.  “And here you are, asking me to leave my husband, for you…  Who the hell do you think you are?”

“Look, Lily.  I’m trying to be honest with you here.  I thought you would appreciate that.  I can’t be with you, when I know you’re still with him…  I can’t bare the thought of him, or anyone else for that matter, touching you.  But if you’re not in my bed…you have to understand that I still have needs.”

“So what are you saying?” Lola asked, looking at Danny, afraid of the answer, but unable to hold herself back from asking the question.  “Are you saying that unless I leave Bolu right now, you will continue to sleep around with other women?”

“Lily, it’s you I want…  Nobody else.  With them, it’s just sex…”

Them???  Oh my God!” Lola rose from the toilet seat, and pushed her way past Danny.  She grabbed her handbag and headed for the door.  She couldn’t handle this.  The thought of Danny with one woman was bad enough.  But how many were there really?  Was there one in every city?  More than one in every city?  And how was she to know if he would ever stop having mere sex with them…?  No, this was too much to bear.

Danny raced and stopped her at the door.  “Lily, calm down.  Please.  I’m sorry.”  He held her in his arms.

Lola stood cold and still in his arms.  No, she couldn’t deal with this.  She should never have allowed herself to fall in love with him.

Danny began to kiss her neck, her chin, the sides of her lips, until she relaxed and let him kiss her again.  The last kiss, Lola thought.  Just this last kiss, and I’ll forget I ever loved you.  She cried as she kissed him back.

**********

Lola finally returned to her suite at 10am.  After their kiss, Danny had apologised, and promised that they would be together when he returned to Lagos tomorrow evening.  All she had to do was come clean with Bolu that she was in love with someone else and would be leaving him.  Then they could be together at last.  He promised that he would wait for her until then…

Lola wanted to believe him, but she couldn’t.  She looked into his eyes, and didn’t know him anymore.  The problem was that she still wanted him…she still loved him.  But she could not trust him, so they really had no future.

She had nodded agreement to his terms, and agreed for him to escort her to the airport, once she had packed up her things.  She acted like nothing had changed, because she didn’t want him to know that they were over.  Not until she had made it to Lagos.  Not until she was far enough from him, and was able to nurse her broken heart.

The ride to the airport was strange.  Lola was crying inside, but forcing a smile on the outside.  Danny held her close, and rubbed her arms gently, soothing her pain the best he could.  He couldn’t believe that he had been so careless to leave evidence of his affairs around.  He hoped that the damage would not be fatal to his relationship with Lily.  He had to work extra hard now to make sure he regained her trust…  He hadn’t realised how strongly he felt for her, until he thought he was going to lose her this morning.  He had to do some major damage control to regain his hold of her fragile heart…

At the airport, Danny kissed Lola passionately.  This time, she was the one to pull away and say goodbye.  Lola kept her composure until she had boarded the flight, and Danny was just a dot on the ground.  Then she cried bitterly, the whole way home.

  1. An interesting turn I didn’t anticipate (i.e. her discovery of who he really is & how far she’s allowed herself to chase after the wind).
I like the narrating of the story because while it’s easy to say ‘hey, you’re married, what are you doing’… the sad reality is… this is exactly what is being done when one throws caution to the wind so-to-speak… basically becoming careless and reckless with the things that should be sacred… giving full governance to the emotions instead of logic, intellect and morals.

    Stay blessed and inspired!

  2. Mmmm….it’s either Lola isn’t thinking straight or she’s completely naive. For her to be thinking of leaving her husband for a man she barely knows; all b’cis of “nice time” away from home.

Anyway, I must commend you on how you portrayed Danny. It’s almost like it was a man that wrote his part, b’cos you got how a man would reponse/react to such a woman in that situation.

  3. lol .. lovely story… did it end at part13? @Dee-light its easy to say go back to your husband but a woman has emotional needs, this is more than sex; we, the husbands should hold on to what we have before a wolf snatches our Lola…

  4. Wow! God loves Lola sooooo much, for Him to have given her such open vision.
I mean, how many of us really get that?

When we focus on the the things our loved ones fail to give us, we lose out on the bigger blessings we have and fall prey to the enemy. All because we see ourselves as victims.
Help all believers across the world, oh Lord!
