An Emotional Affair

An Emotional Affair – Part Seventeen

The thief cometh not, but for to steal, and to kill, and to destroy” (John 10:10).

Lola’s instinct was to scream “Yes! Yes! Oh, yes… I’d rather be married to you any day…”  Having spent long enough discontented in marriage, and knowing all the things Danny could offer her that Bolu couldn’t and wouldn’t for a while to come (if ever), the idea of marrying Danny was like winning the lottery!  But before she ran with her first thoughts, Lola paused, as she remembered Mama’s counsel last night… “consider the tail!

So she did.  It was like the longest pause of marriage proposal history, as Lola pondered on what it would mean to marry Danny.  She saw herself in a beautiful mansion, with maids at her service, and two little kids running around, while Danny flew frequently between Port Harcourt, Abuja, Lagos and other destinations for business. Then she saw him walking into his penthouse suites with different women, and the graphic scene of them having sex…because he still had needs, after all…  She shuddered at that thought.

Then she remembered that Mama had also said that he would have to be a fool to want to marry a woman who walked out on her husband to be with him.  And what she knew about Danny was that he was very smart…so why was he asking her to marry him?  Did he fully intend to make her his wife, or was this just a way to have her all to himself, until he was ready to move on…you know, the everlasting “engagement”?  And they hadn’t been dating even a week…  Only a fool would propose to someone they just met…and only a fool would accept such a proposal!  Did he really think she was that foolish?

Lola looked down at the expensive, glistening big diamond held in a white gold band, and listened as another voice began its ministration.  You’re over-thinking it!  “Love doesn’t ask why…” ***to the tune of Celine Dion***  Just say ‘Yes’!  You love him, and he loves you too.  He can offer you so much more.  He’s rich and handsome and charming, and you get on so well…  He can change.  You guys can make it work…  You played it safe with Bolu, and look how miserable you’ve been.  Take a chance for once in your life…  You deserve to be happy.  Say ‘Yes!’

Lola looked at Danny with hope…  Her heart and spirit were still in conflict, and her indecisive mind wasn’t helping matters.  She wanted to ask him to let her think about it, but then she saw it.  It was only a split second, but it was long enough.  It was the exact same triumphant look she had seen in her dream last night…

This was a game to him, she realised.  He did not really love her at all, he just didn’t want to lose…he didn’t want Bolu to have her.  Even his question was a dead give-away of the fact that he felt he was competing for her affections…wouldn’t you rather be mine?

Lola smiled, as the scales finally fell from her eyes.  She was free.  He no longer had any pull on her.  She got up and started laughing, as tears of joy and relief clouded her eyes.  She went to the doorway and continued laughing, wiping away the tears and taking in some refreshing deep breaths.  She had come so close to throwing her life away.

Danny rose up, unsure what was going on.  He couldn’t decipher if it was a laughter of joy or mockery…  He reached out to hold her hand, and she let him.  Danny stroked her hand affectionately.  “I’m not joking, Lily.  I want to marry you.  What do you say?”

“Oh Danny, your offer is so very tempting, but no…” Lola said, retrieving her hand from his grasp.  She opened the door resolutely.  “Now, fetch!”

Lola flung the ring across the showroom as hard as she could.  Danny looked at her as if she was mad, before dashing in search of it.  “Are you crazy?  That cost a fortune!”

Lola threw the case after him, then the flowers and the bag of things he had bought her too.  “Sorry, but I’m not for sale!”  She slammed her door shut.

Feeling victorious, Lola fell back into her office seat with glee.  It was over!  Thank You, Jesus!

While Lola was still reveling in her freedom, Ms Shittu barged into her office.

“I hope you realise that you just sent away our biggest client this year!” Ms Shittu shouted angrily.

Lola opened her mouth to defend herself, and then noticed a smile creeping on Ms Shittu’s face.  “But I’m proud of you,” she added.  “I heard every word!”

“How?” Lola asked, amazed.

“We were listening, of course.  It’s not everyday a client walks into the office of a married woman with a bouquet of roses!”

Lola laughed.  “I’m sorry for losing your client though,” she said seriously.

“Eh, he’s a pig!  He doesn’t deserve our business.  In fact, I have a good mind to warn others of him as well…” Ms Shittu said.  “But are you ok?”

Lola looked down…  There were repercussions from her affair.  She had really done some damage to her marriage.  She looked up and smiled.  “I will be.  Thank you.”

“Ok, well get back to work!  We need to find new business, if you want to get paid this month!”  Ms Shittu smiled as she left Lola’s office.

Lola smiled and got back to work.  Ms Shittu was something special.  Thank God for her.

Lola arrived at home to find Bolu on the armchair, and Mama sat on the sofa across from him.  She looked at the clock.  It was just 6:30pm.  She looked at both of them wondering what was wrong.

“You’d better sit down,” Bimbo said.

She sat down next to Mama.  “What happened?”

“Bolu was laid off today…  It was Danny.”

“What???” Lola exclaimed.  “What did he do?”

“He provoked Bolu…  He told him you would leave him tonight by showing him a ring he bought for you.  So Bolu attacked him.”

Lola put her hand across her mouth.  She never thought Danny would do something so awful!  She went to her husband, got on her knees and hugged him.  “Baby, I’m so sorry.  I’m so sorry!”

Bolu removed her hands from behind his neck, and pushed her away.  “It’s too late for sorry now.”

Lola stood up, her mind in turmoil.  She had to make this right.  She just had to.  She would go to Bolu’s boss in the morning and beg him.  He would understand.  Oh, Lord, make him understand, she prayed silently.

Lola drove the car to work in the morning, while Bolu slept in.  She had called Ms Shittu and asked her permission to make a detour before coming to the office.  Ms Shittu had been understanding.

Lola was informed by Precious, Mr Williams’ PA, that he only saw people by appointment, and that she would have to make one.  She insisted that he would see her and she was ready to wait as long as it took.  She waited for over an hour before Mr Williams showed up at his office.

While she waited, she prayed.  She prayed that she would find favour in Mr Williams’ eyes…  That God would grant him understanding, and grace to pardon Bolu.  She also prayed for her marriage to be restored, that God would show her and Bolu how to move past this terrible ordeal.

Mr Williams came and found her praying.  He looked at her oddly before he walked into the office.  He called his PA into his office to inquire about the lady.  “I don’t know who she is, Sir.  She refused to make an appointment.”

As Precious came out of his office, she said, “He will see you.  Just give him a few minutes to settle down.”

After twenty more minutes, Precious got the call for Lola to come in.  “You can go in now,” she said.

Lola went in and curtsied in greeting.

“That’s quite alright, young lady.  How can I help you?”

“It is about my husband, Sir.  You laid him off yesterday.  Bolu Adetayo.”

“Ahhh…” he thought she had looked familiar.  They had only met once or twice before.  “I’m sorry, there’s nothing I can do to help him anymore.”

“Please hear me out, Sir.  I know you fear God.  My husband told me that you’re a man of character.  Please don’t send me away.”

“Okay, sit down,” Mr Williams pointed to one of the chairs in front of his desk, and looked at his watch.  This had to be quick.  “What do you have to say?”

“The man who my husband attacked yesterday was a client of mine.  We had a brief affair, and I tried to break it off with him.  He wouldn’t listen to me, and he came here yesterday to provoke my husband.”

“What?”  Was she talking about his friend, Danny?

“My husband is not a violent man, Sir.  Danny must have said some really horrible things to make him do what he did.  But it was my fault.  Please don’t punish Bolu for my mistake.”

“You had an affair with Danny?” Mr Williams asked, bewildered.

“He proposed to me yesterday.  Before that, he came here to flaunt the ring before my husband, and told him I would leave him.”

“So, you are Lily, then?” Mr Williams asked, finally putting the pieces together.  Lola was surprised that he knew that name.  She nodded.  “Oh my!”

“Will you help my husband?  Please?”

“I don’t know how I can help him…we have a code of practice and he broke it.  But I will see what I can do.”

“Thank you, Sir.  God bless you.  Thank you.”

Lola stepped out of the office, hoping she had done enough, and prayed that God would intervene.

Folarin mused on his conversation with Lola after she had left his office.  He felt bad and somehow responsible for unleashing Danny on Bolu’s marriage.  He knew Danny was an unscrupulous man, who would go to any lengths to get what he wanted.  But he hadn’t considered the possibility that Danny would go after Bolu’s wife.  He hadn’t made the connection when Danny had told him that the object of his interest at Da-Vyne Interiors was Lily.

While still trying to think of how he could deal with the situation, he decided to give Danny a call, to glean more information.

“Hi Folarin, what’s up?” Danny said, when he had picked the call.

“I just wanted to apologise again for what happened yesterday.  It is quite unlike Bolu.  I don’t know what possessed him,” Folarin said.

“It’s ok.  It’s sorted now.”

“I was just wondering, though…  You don’t have any case opened with Bolu, so how come you were at his office?”

“Ummm…  I was actually coming to see you about something.  We met in the elevator and got talking,” Danny lied.

“Oh…  But what could you possibly have said to make him want to strangle you?”

“Where are you going with your questions?  I was attacked in your building – by your employee…  You’re lucky I am not suing you!”

Folarin sat back in his seat.  Danny had gone too far this time.  “Danny, I know about Lily.”

“What?  What did Bolu tell you?  Are you going to believe him over me?”

“Bolu didn’t tell me anything.  Lola came to my office.  She told me you proposed to her yesterday, after flaunting your ring in Bolu’s office.  You provoked him, didn’t you?”

Danny was quiet for a while.  “Whatever I did, that man tried to kill me!  If you don’t discipline him, I will sue you.”

“Danny, you’re smarter than that.  You should know better than to threaten your lawyer,” Folarin said, unmoved.  “I know all your filthy secrets.  And just for the record, a good case of sexual harassment and malice can be made against you.  Don’t push me!”

Danny breathed heavily into the phone, to indicate that he was furious.  “I did not sexually harass anyone.”

“Let’s check the facts for a minute.  You’re a rich client, who is offering a profitable business opportunity.  She’s a married woman, who you pursued knowing full well her primary interest was to secure your business.  She turned you down, and then you went after her husband.  It’s not looking good for you.  Any judge in this land would sympathize with Bolu.”

“So what?  What are you going to do?”

“Leave Lola and Bolu alone.  You’ve gone too far this time.  It’s over.  Lick your wounds and move along.”

Danny fumed.  “Folarin, you will regret this!”

“I’m about the only friend you’ve got.  Because I know you, I will pardon you on that.  But don’t you ever threaten me again!” Folarin said with indignation, as he hung up the phone.

Bolu got a call from Crowne Legal at 12 noon.  It was his former boss, Mr Williams.  He told him about his wife’s visit to his office this morning, and that he knew that he had been provoked by Danny.  While he still maintained that he should have conducted himself in a more professional manner, he understood his situation, and was willing to offer him a full pardon.

Unless Danny filed charges for the assault, which he seriously doubted, there would be no case made against Bolu.  Bolu could resume work the next day.

“Thank you Sir!  I’m very grateful.  But can I plead your grace to resume on Monday instead?  I need to attend to urgent matters at home.”

For a strange reason, Mr Williams was moved to oblige Bolu’s request.  He wished him and Lola well as they tried to mend their marriage.

  3. This episode warmed my heart with joy. It still amazes me how the seeming little words of advice we share help people in dire situations.
See how Mama Bolu’s words helped Lola.

God worked on Lola so much that she admitted her wrong before Bolu’s boss In Bolu’s defence.
Thankfully, Bolu got his job back.

One truth about life though is that at times, people like Danny repent of their sins and become born again. God’s grace is open to all.

    Well done, Ufuoma.
