God hates sin! We know this. We know also that whatever is not done of faith is sin (Rom 14:23). That is a lot of things we do and take for granted. As humans, we constantly find ourselves worrying. This is sin. Jesus said clearly “do not worry” (Matt 6:25).
We are often told that God cannot abide with evil, so where does God go when His children sin? Since He cannot abide with evil, and sin is evil. Sin says we do not believe that He is, that He loves, that He cares or that He can!
Jesus walked with sinners. He saw their sin even before they committed it. He saw their hearts were filled with darkness. But He saw that they needed Him. So He stayed and showed them the Way… He went the extra mile and died for them! And on that Cross, as they mocked Him, He graciously said “Father, forgive them; for they know not what they do…” (Luke 23:34).
God hates sin, but God doesn’t run away. He expels sin instead. He delivers His children from the grip of their enemy. He cares for them. He picks them up. He encourages them. He heals them. He restores them. He doesn’t give up, where there is the smallest element of faith.
Some people think God is easily offended. They think He is like a human, who is petty. Who looks on the outward appearance, and does not see the heart of the matter. Who looks at the present, and doesn’t consider the future. They think He is short-tempered, vindictive and even oppressive.
But we know that God is compassionate. He is long-suffering. He is kind and He loves to forgive sin and reconcile the sinner to Himself. He is love, and we know that “Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres. Love never fails… (1 Cor 13:4-8).
Yes, we ought to hate sin. In ourselves and in others. We ought to rid ourselves of it…but most of all, we should not be afraid to run to Him, who alone can make us clean. He will not run from us, because of our sin. He even runs to us… He wants our deliverance. He wants our healing. He wants our restoration.
Don’t let the evidence of sin cause you to quit. Let it cause you to fight. For yourself and others too. To call on God and hold on to Him. To humble yourself, and accept His forgiveness. Let Him love you…and teach you His holy Way.
God is not easily offended. God is gracious (Psa 145:8). No matter what you have done…call out to Him today, and He will come to you. Your faith will draw Him near to you. And you will be healed. And you will be saved.
