This question was asked in a group I manage on WhatsApp. It doesn’t relate to any particular post I have written, but I believe the lessons and answer I gave are important to share.
It was posed:
This issue keeps bothering through my mind pls i need your opinion #Critical #Issue… A Christian sister in a certain Church got pregnant, the Church decided to discipline her since she was not married nor engaged. When the elders of the Church met her, she told them that she has stayed in the Church for years and no one is proposing to her and she is getting to the age were she can’t get pregnant ifmarried. So she went and did artificial insemination sinceshe wants a child. She provided the medical documents that showed that she has indeed done the artificial insemination. The Sister is pregnant without committing fornication nor adultery. Not so?BUT COULD THIS BE A SIN?If YES or NO plsGive your reasons for your answer. If possible back it up with Scriptures,This issue happened in real life. Please I need our individual beliefs on this
Ummm…interesting. I learnt a thing or two during the fiasco about me saying ‘kissing’ is not a sin. Problem was in the definition of sin.
The lady didn’t commit sexual sin, but it doesn’t mean that she didn’t commit sin through her actions. Sin is not always tangible, like greed and pride.
When someone steals, it is easy to say they have commited sin, because of the evidence. But if the same person rather spends their time coveting their neighbour’s possession and being miserable and grumbling because they lack, they are also sinning! And that may even be worse than if they stole.
So, in this regard, it isn’t a clear cut case. Trying to make a rule is in fact a sin, because we take away the role of the Holy Spirit to convict us of sin, regardless of what the law says. The relationship with God is what is important.
Even if it is legal or righteous, e.g. legitimate marriage, if God tells you no and you do otherwise, IT IS SIN TO YOU. And if it is illegal, and even considered unrighteous, and God asks you to do it (like when God commanded the Israelites to annihilate whole civilizations and leave none alive), but you spare some for any reason IT IS SIN TO YOU.
So, the questions are; did she ask God? Did God say Yes? Did she do so with a clear conscience? Does her conscience now condemn her, or has God given her peace on the issue?
If her conscience does not condemn her, because she sought God’s will (not because she has seared it with a disobedient lifestyle), she will not be moved by what men say or do. She can hang on God’s word to her. But the Bible says, if our hearts condemn us…God is greater than our hearts (1 John 3:20)!
The Bible also defines sin as ANYTHING not done in faith (Romans 14:23). So dear, don’t be legalistic. It’s about a sincere relationship, when we act in love and wisdom and fellowship with the Holy Spirit. Ultimately, only God can judge her on this issue. And He will certainly use her conscience to tell her if she acted in faith or in rebellion.
Can I just also add that even if this woman sinned, there’s still grace and forgiveness in Christ. She should not be condemned and turn away from her hope of reconciliation. She needs to ask and accept forgiveness from God and decide to walk in obedience and righteousness. Her baby is innocent and has its own life now, and she is duty-bound to look after it and not seek to destroy it.
