Writing is a calling, as much as singing is. It isn’t entirely about skill, but also about passion and commitment to BECOMING the best you can be at what you do. If you are new to writing, have a book idea, or even a few drafts, and are wondering if you have what it takes to become a paid writer or author, then you need to have and do the following…
1. Boldness. It is audacious to say you want to write and speak your mind and heart. Imposter syndrome may try to stop you, as you ask yourself, “Who do you think you are…?” You need boldness and courage to follow through; from called to chosen.
2. Determination. Not everyone will get it or support you. Some may dissuade or belittle your ability. Do it anyway. Your first draft may not be that good; that’s why there are editors. Try again; you can do it.
3. Stamina. You have a long way ahead, especially if you’re self-publishing. Draw on your inner strength and stay resilient. Write and promote your book/s consistently. Don’t be discouraged, even though sales and reviews may be low and slow in coming.
4. Fellowship. It helps to have people who see your dream and support you. Hold on to them and, if you can, join a community of like-minded writers and dreamchasers. This will help you stay accountable, disciplined, encouraged, and motivated.
5. Faith. Ultimately, you need this to keep the dream alive, especially when you come across rejections and setbacks. Believe in yourself, trust in God! Put yourself out there; your breakthrough is coming…
6. Creative Diversity. Gone are the days that you can only be a poet, or a blogger, or a fiction writer. Develop your skills, stretch yourself, find your unique gifts and niche and exploit to your advantage.
7. Humility. Listen to constructive criticism from trusted people/professionals and make efforts to improve your art, not to please anyone, but to be the best you can be. Even the best of us are still learning.
8. Engage. Much inspiration comes from being in the world, interacting with those who hurt, listening to diverse views, and discerning your voice. Don’t limit yourself or your perspective through isolation.
9. Audacity. Write that book, that story, that is different. Say that thing that people think and fear to say. Go there! Do not be afraid to be controversial. But be classy with it…
10. Inspire. We have a powerful talent and medium by which we can impact lives. Use it for good. Let your words uplift and encourage others, and there will always be a reader for your work.
I hope this inspires you to take that move to make your writing career a reality. Much of the time, we are the ones standing in our own way. Don’t do that to yourself. Go for it!
Wishing you all the best!
