Sin. Who has never fallen into it? Who has never relished it? Every single one of us has loved sin. Many still maintain a love-hate relationship with sin.
When we came to Christ, there were some sins that were just so hard to forsake. Some that we had to be pulled away from, kicking and screaming. And others which we have succumbed to, time and again, despite knowing that we will be burned, that it would not satisfy, that it would leave us worse off than we were were before.
Why is sin so hard to relinquish? Why does its appeal not die with the knowledge that it is poison? I mean, who keeps a can of poison in their house, just in case…so they can go and look at it now and then, and consider taking a sip? When you almost died from being intoxicated with it, how can you look upon it with less than horror and dread?
Yet, I reckon there are many, many of us who still have fond memories of the “good ole days”, when we reveled in sin. It might not even be anything so far back…or anything so sordid. Maybe it was just last week, when you gave that woman a piece of your mind, even though you knew it was wrong, and the Spirit was prompting you to hold your tongue! Your flesh was screaming the contrary, and a part of you was proud that you finally let her have it!
Do you still smile about it? Do you still think of the times you indulged in sexual immorality with pleasure? Do you laugh when you remember what a naughty temptress you were, dressing sexy and shaking your hot stuff in front of all the guys? Do you still enjoy the rewards from cheating on that exam, from lying to your parents, or feel smart or ‘lucky’ for getting away with cheating on your spouse?
Do you still fancy the idea of sin? Do you find your new life as a Christian boring? So many rules? Do you think a little sin is harmless…maybe even good for humility? Do you delight in evil, and frown at the truth?
It could very well be that the Spirit in you is not Christ. Christ was crucified for the smallest sin that still makes you smile. How can His Spirit be in you, when you don’t hate it? When you live comfortably with sin, romanticize it and do not bleed from the memory of the torment your sin wrought in Christ… How can the thought of sin not make you think of the nails you are plunging into His hands and feet, nor the sword you are piercing in His side?
We know that “love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth” (1 Cor 13:6). Only the devil makes evil look innocent, and wickedness look good. It is the devil who delights in evil and hates and wrestles continually with the truth.
Who do you love? What fills you with dread…a life of devotion to God or a life uninhibited apart from God? Don’t be double-minded. If you can’t choose, you already have!
“Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. Draw nigh to God, and he will draw nigh to you. Cleanse your hands, ye sinners; and purify your hearts, ye double minded. Be afflicted, and mourn, and weep: let your laughter be turned to mourning, and your joy to heaviness” (Jam 4:7-9).
