Reader Questions: Is Begging The Solution?

I was asked this question in a Whatsapp Group I manage, after the lady read my post Traffic Jam.  My response was short, but I think it might help some of my readers better understand what social workers do.  If you have more questions, feel free to ask.

Dear Ufuomaee,

I know you are a social worker… Though am yet to really understand that. How do you Balance people who beg, they are whole, not handicapped. Pls don’t get me wrong.

You see them every day. And I know that charity doesn’t end poverty.  But they beg, is that the solution or the only way out, to beg?

Dear Reader,

Well, there are many things that hinder men, women and children besides physical disability.  You can’t always know why someone is begging and what they have done or tried to do to alleviate their situation.

So, you don’t understand social work or what a social worker does?

One of the things social workers do is ASSESS needs.  So they ask questions, investigate, liaise with other people to address common challenges, and try not to make things worse for people suffering by judging them.  Social workers do not give money away.  Philanthropists do, but usually after they have had social workers assess that the need is valid and the funds will be well used.

About whether begging is the solution.  Social workers understand that sometimes people need to beg.  That might be the only voice they have or only way they know to get help.  The person who can tell you the solution besides begging when you are in dire straits is the one who was in that SAME situation and found another way to relieve themselves, and are now successful in society.  No one else has a right to tell someone not to beg.  You can only show kindness, because shit happens, and it could have been you.

Sincerely, Ufuoma.
