Osinachi walked in to the small two-bedroom apartment. She placed her dish on the dining table and stood awkwardly until Chinyere offered her a seat. “Thanks.”

Chinyere went into the kitchen to get a plate and a spoon. She had just been about to make herself some two-minute noodles, so this was a pleasant alternative. She opened the bowl to find freshly cooked jollof rice, grilled chicken, fried plantain, moi-moi and salad. It was a feast! Her mouth watered as she served herself, wondering if she should offer her guest. She decided it wasn’t necessary.

“So, how are you doing?” Osinachi asked, when Chinyere returned with a tray to eat in the living room.

“I’m fine,” Chinyere said, dropping the “Ma” that was at the tip of her tongue. The woman was not worthy of that respect, she told herself…
