Sometime last week, I was looking for something to watch while I worked, and I was unsettled about doing the usual – Netflix. I’d already acknowledged that I needed to feed my mind with inspiration and learning, but it was just a light craving. I didn’t know how hungry I was…
I checked YouTube, and the first video I saw was “Watch This Instead of Netflix.” It was a motivational video, and I thought, why not? That video, which was about Oprah, as she shared lots of wisdom she’s gained over the years, was like an oasis in the midst of the desert that I’ve been trekking without realising. I didn’t know I was starving and dying of thirst!
The way I absorbed what I was listening to, like someone who had been in the dark and deprived, was mad… And yet, I was hungry for more. So, after that video, I watched another, and then another, until I realised, this was real. I’m going to have to take control of my life. I’m going to have to do something different. I’m going to have to do lots of things differently…
I listened to many different types of motivational speakers and preachers, and I haven’t stopped since. This is what I craved; teaching that hit my soul, more than music, more than films, more than relaxation… I needed this fire up my butt, not just to get up and hit the road, but to keep it going.
I realised, as I listened, that what you feed yourself matters so much! Not just what you feed your body, but what you feed your mind too. My mind was sick, depressed, and I didn’t know how critical it was. I didn’t know how every day counts, and every minute counts if we want to the have the life we desire. We’re going to have to be intentional about EVERYTHING we do and choose not to do. We have to be AWARE of where we are, where we are going, and what it’s going to take to get there. And then we need discipline to get there.
I don’t know if you’re like me, just coasting in life and letting things happen to you. If that’s you, you need to wake up and change. You need to decide to be proactive not reactive. You need to be HUNGRY, even if you don’t feel that hungry, because it is only the hungry that will succeed!
Jesus even said it… “Blessed are those who HUNGER and THIRST after righteousness, for they shall be FILLED” (Matthew 5:6). Interesting enough, that was the Bible verse yesterday on YouVersion Bible App, and my son and I did that study together. As I taught him what the scripture meant, I realised how many ways I’d been acting full, when I was truly destitute. Like Jesus said to the church of the Laodiceans…
“You say, ‘I am rich; I have acquired wealth and do not need a thing.’ But you do not realize that you are wretched, pitiful, poor, blind and naked…” (Revelation 3:17).
Is this scripture shouting at you? It’s shouting at me. But instead of recoiling in shame, we are to be like the wise person that James spoke of, who after seeing his true reflection does something about it (James 1:23-25)! Do something about it.
Today is Day Three of my new life – UFUOMAEE 4.0 – which I made a decision to reboot last Friday. I’m done letting life happen to me and letting opportunities pass me by. I’m actively working to create the life I dream of…and the life God has dreamed for me.
How about you? How hungry are you?
